Avicenna Centre for Brain Health provides psychiatric assessment and consultation for adults living with mental health concerns. Our adult program offers physician-led assessment, medication recommendations, and multidisciplinary input from allied health professionals, all in one coordinated setting.
Avicenna follows a consultation-based model. You meet with a psychiatrist for an initial assessment, where they review your symptoms, history, and previous treatments, and then provide recommendations covering medication, psychosocial intervention, therapy, and other supports. Your family doctor or nurse practitioner remains responsible for your ongoing care after the consultation, and our Patient Care Coordinators can help you understand and access any recommended services.
Adults are referred for a wide range of concerns, including depression, anxiety, mood disorders, psychosis-related symptoms, behavioural concerns, and the need for medication review or diagnostic clarification. An assessment helps clarify what is happening and what treatment approach makes sense.
During your consultation, the psychiatrist completes an assessment based on the reason for referral and your history. You may receive diagnostic impressions, medication recommendations, psychosocial and therapy recommendations, suggestions for further assessment where appropriate, and guidance for your family physician to support ongoing care.
Adult patients benefit from a team that includes psychiatrists, nurses, psychologists, and allied health professionals. Where appropriate, you may be connected with private-pay allied health services such as counselling or psychology to support your care plan.
The psychiatric consultation is covered by your provincial health plan (MSP in British Columbia, AHCIP in Alberta) when you have valid coverage and a referral from your family doctor or nurse practitioner. Private-pay allied health services may be covered in part by extended health benefits.
Avicenna is a referral-based clinic and is not an urgent or crisis service. If you or someone you care about is in crisis, please call 911, or call or text the 988 Suicide Crisis Helpline.
We offer adult psychiatric care at our Delta, BC and Calgary, AB clinics. Contact the location nearest you to begin, or learn more about our broader psychiatric services.
