Avicenna Centre for Brain Health offers counselling, psychology, and therapy services for individuals, couples, and families in Calgary. Whether you are managing anxiety, working through a difficult period, healing from trauma, or simply want support from a qualified professional, our therapy team is here to help. Unlike a standalone counselling practice, our therapists work inside a full multidisciplinary mental health clinic, so your care can be coordinated with psychiatric and medical support when that is helpful.
Counselling and therapy do not require a physician referral, which makes this one of the most direct ways to begin care at Avicenna. Sessions are available in person at our Calgary clinic and virtually across Alberta.
People come to therapy for many reasons, and you do not need to be in crisis to benefit from it. Our team supports patients dealing with concerns such as:
Avicenna’s therapy program offers a range of evidence-based approaches, matched to your needs by an Avicenna counsellor or psychologist. These include:
Our psychology services also include diagnostic, treatment, educational, and consultation support, depending on what you need.
Many patients begin therapy on its own, and that is completely fine. For others, therapy is recommended after a psychiatric consultation as part of a broader treatment plan. Because Avicenna brings psychiatry, psychology, and allied health together under one roof, your therapist can work in step with the rest of your care team when appropriate, rather than in isolation. This is especially valuable when therapy and medication are most effective together.
You do not need a referral from a family doctor or nurse practitioner to access counselling, psychology, or therapy at Avicenna. You can contact us directly and our team will help match you with the right therapist and approach. If you are already an Avicenna patient, your care coordinator can connect you with therapy as part of your plan.
Counselling and psychology provided in private practice are not covered by the Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP). They are private-pay services. The good news is that many extended health and employer benefit plans reimburse some or all of the cost of counselling, psychology, or social work sessions, and some Albertans have supplementary coverage that helps with psychologist visits. Our coordinators can help you understand your coverage and what to expect before you begin.
Therapy is one of the most flexible services we offer. You can be seen in person at our Calgary clinic in Montgomery, or by secure video anywhere in Alberta, which can save travel time and make it easier to keep regular appointments. Ask our team which option suits you best.
Avicenna is not an urgent or crisis service. If you or someone you care about is in crisis, please call 911, contact Alberta Health Services Access 24/7, or call the provincial Mental Health Helpline at 1-877-303-2642. These services are available when you need immediate support.

A psychiatrist is a physician who focuses on diagnosis and medication, usually through consultation. Therapy is talk-based treatment delivered by a counsellor or psychologist. Avicenna offers both and can coordinate them when that is the right approach for you.
