Counselling and Therapy in Calgary, Alberta

Avicenna Centre for Brain Health offers counselling, psychology, and therapy services for individuals, couples, and families in Calgary. Whether you are managing anxiety, working through a difficult period, healing from trauma, or simply want support from a qualified professional, our therapy team is here to help. Unlike a standalone counselling practice, our therapists work inside a full multidisciplinary mental health clinic, so your care can be coordinated with psychiatric and medical support when that is helpful.

Counselling and therapy do not require a physician referral, which makes this one of the most direct ways to begin care at Avicenna. Sessions are available in person at our Calgary clinic and virtually across Alberta.

What counselling and therapy can help with

People come to therapy for many reasons, and you do not need to be in crisis to benefit from it. Our team supports patients dealing with concerns such as:

  • Anxiety, worry, and panic
  • Depression and low mood
  • Stress and burnout
  • Trauma and its lasting effects
  • Grief and loss
  • Relationship and family difficulties
  • Self-esteem and identity concerns
  • Life transitions and major changes
  • Emotional regulation and coping skills

Our therapy and counselling services

Avicenna’s therapy program offers a range of evidence-based approaches, matched to your needs by an Avicenna counsellor or psychologist. These include:

  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), which helps you understand and shift unhelpful thought and behaviour patterns, often used for anxiety and depression.
  • Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), which builds skills in emotional regulation, distress tolerance, and relationships.
  • Trauma-focused therapy, which supports recovery from past trauma at a pace that feels safe.
  • Art therapy, which offers a creative route to processing emotions and experiences.
  • Individual, couples, and family counselling, depending on who the support is for.

Our psychology services also include diagnostic, treatment, educational, and consultation support, depending on what you need.

Therapy as part of coordinated care

Many patients begin therapy on its own, and that is completely fine. For others, therapy is recommended after a psychiatric consultation as part of a broader treatment plan. Because Avicenna brings psychiatry, psychology, and allied health together under one roof, your therapist can work in step with the rest of your care team when appropriate, rather than in isolation. This is especially valuable when therapy and medication are most effective together.

No referral required, and how to start

You do not need a referral from a family doctor or nurse practitioner to access counselling, psychology, or therapy at Avicenna. You can contact us directly and our team will help match you with the right therapist and approach. If you are already an Avicenna patient, your care coordinator can connect you with therapy as part of your plan.

Coverage and cost in Alberta

Counselling and psychology provided in private practice are not covered by the Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP). They are private-pay services. The good news is that many extended health and employer benefit plans reimburse some or all of the cost of counselling, psychology, or social work sessions, and some Albertans have supplementary coverage that helps with psychologist visits. Our coordinators can help you understand your coverage and what to expect before you begin.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a referral for counselling or therapy?

No. Counselling, psychology, and therapy can be accessed directly without a physician referral. You can contact our Calgary team to get started.

Is therapy covered in Alberta?

Private counselling and psychology are not covered by AHCIP, but many extended health and employer benefit plans reimburse a portion. Our coordinators can help you check your coverage.

What types of therapy do you offer?

Our team offers approaches including CBT, DBT, trauma-focused therapy, and art therapy, for individuals, couples, and families.

Can I do therapy virtually?

Yes. Sessions are available in person at our Calgary clinic or by secure video anywhere in Alberta.

How is therapy different from seeing a psychiatrist?

A psychiatrist is a physician who focuses on diagnosis and medication, usually through consultation. Therapy is talk-based treatment delivered by a counsellor or psychologist. Avicenna offers both and can coordinate them when that is the right approach for you.
